How to get sponges in Minecraft
As said earlier, there are only two ways to find sponges in Minecraft. Sponges are only found in ocean monuments. Therefore, the first step to getting sponges is finding Ocean Monuments.
How to Find an Ocean Monument
You can start by finding a village and a Cartographer in the village. You’ll have to trade with him to unlock the Cartographer-Apprentice level of trading. You can only trade papers with emeralds to unlock this level.
After trading with him and reaching the stated level, the village vendor will give you an Ocean Explorer Map. With the map, you can effortlessly find the Ocean Monument.
1. Mob Loot
When you find the Ocean Monument, you’ll find three Elder Guardians. You can get sponges in Minecraft by killing an Elder Guardian because Elder Guardians are the only ones who can drop a sponge. However, it would be best if you were prepared because Elder Guardians can be challenging to kill. Each Elder Guardian will drop only one wet sponge when you kill them. However, given how difficult it is to kill an Elder Guardian and the limited number of sponges they drop, you can use the other alternative.

Using a Sponge in Minecraft

All you have to do is place the sponge where you want to remove the water. It will then absorb water closest to it in all seven directions. However, you’ll have to ensure that the sponge is dry before using it to soak up water.
Technically a sponge can absorb up to 65 blocks of water before it becomes oversaturated. It would help if you also kept in mind that water can flow through a space created by a Sponge. This can happen if you place a dry Sponge at the bottom of an Ocean biome.
It will soak up water in its usual range, but the water above will flow down to refill that air pocket with water. You’ll have to start from the surface and soak up water as you travel downwards.
You can effectively use sponges by placing them on source blocks of water. This will offer more permanent water removal rather than the water flowing back around the sponge.
After collecting the maximum amount of water, your sponge will be converted into a wet sponge. Wet sponges cannot absorb any more water. You can use a wet sponge only after drying it out.
How to Dry a Sponge
Since wet sponges cannot absorb water, you’ll have to dry them before using them. There are two ways you can dry a Sponge in Minecraft:
1. You can instantly dry the wet sponge by placing it in the Nether realm. Any wet sponge placed in the Nether will immediately dry out. However, you will need a Nether Portal.
2. You can also dry a Wet Sponge by placing it on the furnace or using fuel to dry out the water. You can use a bucket as fuel to collect the water. After the white progress arrow has filled up, your sponge will completely dry out. The dried sponge will appear on the right slot.
