Ancient Magic is a powerful but scarce resource reflecting the deepest mysteries of the wizarding world. While common spells may fell most minor foes, Ancient Magic can devastate groups or bring down terrifying beasts and mages.
As described in book excerpts found in the Restricted Section, ancient wizards crafted elite magics both wondrous and terrible over millennia. But such awesome power required intense study, discipline, and ritual to master safely.
Traces of these primordial enchantments still permeate sites of momentous magical events. Those able to perceive and harness these echoes can unleash long-forgotten but mighty arcane arts…for a brief time before exhaustion sets in.

As a 5th year student, I‘m expected to push my talents to their very limits – and finding these hidden hotspots lets me tap into wizarding heritage far beyond modern spellwork. It‘s a challenging test of magical prowess reflecting the advanced arcane mastery of NEWT-level coursework.
Fortunately, through hard-won experience I‘ve uncovered all 20 hotspots for fellow adventurers to also reap these rewards. So prepare for a magical journey across Hogwarts‘ storied history – and secrets that may aid the fate of the entire wizarding world!
Unlocking Ancient Magic
Ancient Magic and associated hotspots are unlocked midway through the main campaign via the "Secrets of the Restricted Section" quest. This tasks you with sneaking into the Restricted Section under cover of invisibility to research unforgivable curses.
While certainly questionable behavior for a prefect like myself, the urgency of confronting possible Death Eater activity necessitates learning powers beyond our years. And within these prohibited tomes lied the keys to perceiving Ancient Magic!
Once the quest is complete, Ancient Magic casting and hotspots are activated on your map with the following upgrades as more are discovered:
- First upgrade – 2 hotspots channeled
- Second upgrade – 6 hotspots channeled
- Final upgrade – 12 hotspots channeled

Ancient Magic Damage
Expanding your Ancient Magic Meter directly bolsters damage output per cast as shown below:

Pro-Tip: The final damage cap is achieved once 12 hotspots are channelled. So while seeking all 20 is advised for completion‘s sake, it technically becomes optional past the second meter upgrade!

While the mere idea of wielding long-lost magics drove me onward, making actual progress was arduous. I carefully annotated each new discovery while referencing online fan maps to make navigating easier for fellow players.
