- And much more from my personal experience!
Let‘s get started with the basics.
Bow Controls and Combos
I customize my bow control scheme specifically for rapid access to coatings and chargable evasion moves. Here is my setup:
Core Bow Controls
Action | Keyboard/Mouse Controls | Switch Controls |
---|---|---|
Aim | Right Mouse Button | ZL |
Shoot | Left Mouse Button | ZR |
Melee Attack | Alt + Mouse Button 4 | A |
Dragon Piercer | Alt + Mouse Button 5 | X + A |
Apply Coating | Shift + Mouse Button 4/5 | Left Button + X/B |
High Damage Bow Combos
Combo Name | Execution | Damage Type |
---|---|---|
Herculean Draw | Shift + Mouse Button 4 | Burst shot after evasion |
Arc Shot Rain | Left Click + Mouse Button 4 | Aerial damage over time |
Dragon Piercer Snipe | Alt + Mouse Button 5 | High precision piercing |
Practice chaining Charging Sidesteps into the Herculean backstep for big evasive damage. Against groups, work in Spread Shots before finishing with a Blast Arc Shot.
Essential Bow Skills
Based on data gathered by hunters across over 100,000 quests[1], these are the most popular armor skills used by top-performing bow users:
Constitution (Level 3)
- 50% reduced stamina depletion when evading and charging
- Vital for rapid shots and evasions
Stamina Surge (Level 3)
- 100% increased stamina recovery speed
- Recover stamina fast between charges
Normal/Rapid Up (Level 2)
- 10%/20% boost to normal and rapid arrow damage
- Affects most bow shot types
With this trifecta, you can fire offCharging Sidesteps endlessly and maintain high damage!
Shot Types
All bows come with different shot types that vary in range and spread. Match the monster weakness and size to pick the optimal one:
Rapid Shot
- Fires 3-5 arrows in a tight spread
- High raw damage output
- Excels against small monster weak points like heads
Spread Shot
- Shoots a wide horizontal arc of arrows
- Hits multiple monsters in a group
- Damages long bodies like Tobi Kadachi
Piercing Shot
- Long sniping shot that can hit multiple times
- Strong against large monsters like Barroth or Uragaan
- Aim down the body length for 5+ hits
Arc Shot Types
I often use Arc Shots to apply blastblight, exhaust monsters, or create openings for big damage.
Blast Arc Shot
- Explodes mid-air in a burst of damage
- Causes blastblight and stuns
- Use against aggressive monsters to disrupt their attacks
Dragon Piercer
- Charges an ultra-damaging piercing arrow
- Can backstab sleeping monsters for 1000+ damage
- Riskier to use but offers massive single hit damage
Bow Coatings
Temporary coatings that enhance arrow effects. Always bring crafting materials for more!
Coating | Effects | Duration |
---|---|---|
Close-Range | +20 True Attack at close range | Unlimited |
Power Coating | +10%/20% Attack | 120/200 seconds |
Poison Coating | 33% chance of poison | 50 shots |
Paralysis Coating | 20% chance of paralysis | 30 shots |
Blast Coating | Seals that cause blast | 20 shots |
I start most hunts applying Power Coating for a damage boost then swapping to Status Coatings to cripple monsters.

Enhance your weapon mastery with these expert combat techniques:

Dash Charged Strafe
- Dodge/dash perpendicular to monsters between focused Charged Shots
- Weave back into critical distance between slides
