1. The Irregular at Magic High School
The 21st century is drawing to a close, and magic is no longer just a legend but a recognized formal technology. It’s spring, and the year is 2095. A new school year has just begun at Magic High School, the first affiliate of the National Magic University. Students are divided into two groups; the “Blooms” – those with high grades who are later enrolled in the “First Course” and the “Weeds” – those with poor grades who are later enrolled in “Second Course.”
This school year, Tatsuya Shiba, the elder brother with poor grades, has been assigned to the “Weeds” group. His younger sister, Miyuki Shiba, is an honor student and assigned to the “Blooms” group. Since the two, brother and sister, joined the prestigious school, the campus has known no peace.
2. The Familiar of Zero (Zero no Tsukaima)
The Familiar of Zero, popularly referred to as Zero no Tsukaima, is an explosive, wild, and adventurous story about a self-absorbed magician named Louise Francoise Le Blanc de La Vallière who finds herself in a world of wands, cloaks, and royalty. Louise is a first-year student at Tristain, a prestigious school for magicians, but has a problem casting her magic properly. Because of this, her classmates have nicknamed her “Louise the Zero”.
However, this negative perspective of Louise by her classmates changes drastically in one summoning ritual. When it was her turn to summon, a seemingly disastrous explosion happened. When the dust finally settled, and the smoke cleared, a boy named Saito Hiraga suddenly appeared.
As Louise’s familiar, Saito is enslaved and mistreated until an unfamiliar brand is found etched on his hand from the summoning ritual. The brand is believed to be the mark of Gandalfr, a powerful familiar. The discovery changes the classmates’ perception of Louise, the magician, for good.
3. Trinity Seven
The Trinity Seven is the story of Arata Kasuga, the protagonist. The story begins with the disappearance of the sun in Arata’s hometown. This culminates in a “Breakdown Phenomenon” – destroying the hometown and its inhabitants. Arata then uses a magical grimoire given to him by Hijiri Kasuga, a childhood friend, and cousin to artificially save and rebuild his hometown. However, trouble strikes a second time when Arata’s artificial world suddenly breaks apart. Lilith Asami is tasked with investigating the whole phenomenon.
With things first spiraling out of control, Arata is given two choices; hand over the book containing the magical grimoire or die; he opts for a third option of enrolling in Royal Biblia Academy, a top-secret magic school. Inside the school, he teams up with Lilith and five other magicians to form the Trinity Seven, an elite squad of magicians with unique powers and skills.
With the help and support of his newfound squad, the Trinity Seven, Arata Kasuga is more than determined to save his cousin Hijiri. More importantly, he’s stopping at nothing to save his hometown from destruction.
4. Little Witch Academia
The Little Witch Academia is a story detailing the magical escapades of Atsuko Akko Kagari and her friends as they learn the art of magic. The protagonist, Akko, admires Shiny Chariot, a renowned witch. She vividly recalls when Shiny Chariot said, “A believing heart is your magic.” These words motivated Akko to enroll in Luna Nova Magical Academy to pursue her dream of becoming a seasoned witch. Akko’s journey to her new school is anything but smooth.
The perilous journey notwithstanding, she gets to school and immediately befriends the shy Lotte Yanson and the sarcastic Sucy Manbavaran.
With the excitement of friends, Akko’s happiness even goes a notch higher when she stumbles upon and owns “the Shiny Rod” – Shiny Chariot’s wand. Her magical antics are soon challenged by Diana Cavendish, a beautiful, gifted, and self-proclaimed elite witch. The sudden twist of events puts Akko in a somewhat defensive position where she’s got to work harder to prove and compensate for her inept magic skills.
5. Tokyo Ravens
Tokyo Ravens are the magic story of Japan as a society and nation. The story details the concept of Onmyoudou magic that was meant to give Japan clear leverage in the Second World War. However, the war didn’t go according to plan as Japan was swiftly defeated, a loss attributed to the “Great Spiritual Disaster” caused by the revered Onmyouji Yakou Tsuchimikado.
The aftermath of the event is believed to plague Tokyo to date still. To exorcise potential spiritual disasters and combat the demons, the Onmyou Agency was established. In the modern context, the Onmyoudou magic concept has permeated many aspects of Japanese society, from technology to medicine.
Even with the simplification, modernization, and incorporation of the Onmyoudou concept into many aspects of Japanese society, some members of the Tsuchimikado family, such as Harutora, cannot use this magic. The heir of the Tsuchimikado’s main family and Yakou’s reincarnation, as her familiar, Harutora has no magical powers of his talent. As such, he chooses to live a normal life. However, he chooses to fight by Natsume’s side when a disaster akin to the “Great Spiritual Disaster” is recreated by a prominent member of the Onmyou Agency.
6. Negima!
Negima is a recreation of the original Negima Anime, although with a different storyline. The story is about a boy called Negi, a seasoned wizard. After finishing his training at the Academy of Magic, Negi continues as a Magic instructor at Japan’s Mahora Academy. However, before he can attain his Masters in Magic, Negi is faced with the temptation of dealing with 31 schoolgirls of class 3A keen on flirting with him. He has to stay up all night long cramming for a final magic exam.
When night falls, it’s time to exorcise ghouls from the school, and the 31 schoolgirls are determined to get extra credits by proving to Negi that they’re better magicians than he is. Not even hours of phantom fighting seem to scare the cuties.
7. Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero
The story plot is based on events that happened at least 3 decades before Hagure Yuusha no Aesthetica. Among the people summoned to other worlds from the earth, Akatsuki Ousawa was sent to Alayzard to battle the Dark Lord Garius, whom he defeated before returning to earth. Other warriors dispatched on similar missions to the other worlds brought back little trinkets as souvenirs.
However, not Akatsuki. After defeating the Dark Lord, he brought back to earth her daughter Miu. Throughout the storyline, Miu poses as Akatsuki’s long-lost little sister. Upon their return to earth, Akatsuki and Miu are forced to enroll in a special Magic school called Babel.
At the school, they’re equipped with the necessary skills to help them master the powers they gained in Alayzard to save humankind one day. All the while, Akatsuki has vowed to keep the true identity of the Dark Lord’s daughter, Miu, a secret – not sure for how long, though.
8. The Misfit of Demon King Academy
The Misfit of Demon King Academy is the story of one Anos Voldigoad, a Demon King. He willingly sacrificed his life to put to rest widespread chaos and bloodshed that had characterized a war between humans and demons in the distant past. Anos, the demon king, lost his life in the hope of reincarnating in a more peaceful future to reclaim his throne once again.
Anos, indeed, woke up two millennia later. However, things were not the way he’d expected. A lot had changed while he was away. For instance, the level of magic on earth has declined significantly. Things only got worse when Anos Voldigoad enrolled at the Demon King Academy in the hope of reclaiming his rightful title as the demon king. Still, his true identity and personality had been falsified, and demonkind remembered him very differently. Because of the lack of common knowledge about the reincarnated demon king, Anos is considered the Magic Academy’s outlier – the Misfit of the Demon King Academy.
Even with all the attempts at erasing Anos’ past achievements, he seems unfazed and more than determined to let his descendants acknowledge that the true demon king is back.
9. Blade Dance of the Elementalers
The Blade Dance of Elementalers is the story of Kamito Kazehaya. On His way to Areishia Spirit Academy, he comes across a naked student called Claire Rouge. Claire was bathing as part of a purification ceremony. She is getting ready to form a contract with a powerful spirit to acquire more powers as an “Elementalist.” Here efforts are rendered futile because Kamito ends up acquiring the spirit and becomes an “Elementalist” himself.
This is happening even though only shrine maidens can become “Elementalists.” Out of frustration, Claire then declares that Kamito had to be her contracted spirit instead.
Upon reaching the school, Kamaito runs from Claire to meet Greyworth Ciel Mais, the headteacher at Areishia Spirit Academy, who then advises him to enroll. He accepts the offer, despite him being the only male student among the shrine princesses. However, in exchange, he gets information about his former contracted spirit, Restia Ashdoll.
10. Sky Wizard Academy
The story is set many years ago when strong and aggressive magical insects invaded earth and almost wiped out humanity. Ever since the inversion, humans no longer live on earth. Instead, they live in floating cities. However, it wasn’t long before wizards from prestigious floating wizard academies started fighting the monster bugs to reclaim the earth.
Kanata Age once considered a “Black Master Swordsman,” is now labeled a traitor. Kanata gets a chance to redeem his reputation by instructing team E601, which consists of three girls, including Rico Flamel, Lecty Eisenach, and Misora Whitale.
11. Absolute Duo
Absolute Duo is the story of Blazers, persons with a special ability to materialize weapons from their souls. Blazers attend Kouryou Academy High School, where they sharpen their powers and skills by working in teams of two to attain the power of Absolute Duo. Tooru Kokonoe intends to join the Academy in the hope of attaining the power of Absolute Duo to avenge the killing of his sister and friends by a mysterious man.
At the school’s opening ceremony, Tooru has to battle it out with the person sitting next to him, with the winner securing the coveted spot in Kouryou Academy. In the duel, something unusual happens, which catches the attention of an international student named Julie Sigtuna. The strange event entails the manifestation of a shield, instead of a weapon, from Tooru’s soul. The occurrence brings a whole new twist to the Absolute Duo story.
12. Chivalry of a Failed Knight
Blazers are individuals with special powers to create weapons out of their souls. Such people train at Hagun Academy to become Mage-Knights. Ikki Kurogane, the only F-rated Balzer at the academy, is challenged to a duel by Stella Vermillion, a princess, and an A-rated Blazer after seeing her naked.
For this particular duel, the winner enslaves the loser. As such, the stakes are high for Ikki, the failed knight, who is determined to prove a point. For Stella, she is the princess and an honors student at the academy. There’s no way she’s going to lose the fight with the academy’s worst student.
13. Unbreakable Machine-Doll
The story is set in Walpurgis Royal Academy of “Machinart.” The institution trains skilled puppeteers to control “Automatons” -mechanical idols brought to life by the Machinart machine magic concept. Raishin Akabane is keen to attend the Evening Party to win the coveted “Wiseman” title.
However, he has failed the entrance exams. So the only other way he’s going to be at the Evening Party is if his humanoid automaton Yaya beats another automaton from one of the top 100 students.
The Party is technically a fight between puppeteers using their “Automatons.” The winner not only gains access to the forbidden “Machinarts” but is also bestowed the title of “Wiseman.”
Raishin challenges Charlotte Belew and her automaton Sigmund to a fight. However, before the fight begins, Sigmund is attacked by other students. Raishin has to come to the rescue of his opponent and goes ahead to cancel the planned fight between Sigmund and Yaya.
With the duel canceled, Raishin has to seek another way to access the Evening Party. Luckily, he finds a workaround and ultimately manages to win the coveted “Wiseman” title.
14. Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor
Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor is the story of Glenn Radars, Sistine Fidel, and Rumia Tingel. Glenn is a new magic instructor at Alzano Imperial Magic Academy. Sistine and Rumia are his students. Since Glenn joined the academy, his lazy and indifferent approach towards life, coupled with his ineptitude in Magic, quickly puts him at odds with the students. And that’s not all. Events at the academy quickly take a new twist when nefarious forces within the walls of the Alzano Empire activate. Glenn, along with Rumia and Sistine, soon find themselves caught up in the empire’s evil schemes.
15. Quiz Magic Academy
The Quiz Magic Academy is an original video animation about students in a prestigious Magic Academy located on a floating island in the sky. In one of the classes, students are getting ready for their end-of-semester magic exams. The stakes are high in the forthcoming exams. Failing might mean one loses their spot and chance at becoming a seasoned magician. However, there’s another workaround for the exam. A competition has been put together where students battle it out by showing their magic skills. The winner gets, among other prizes, a chance to pass the end-of-semester exams.
16. Rosario to Vampire
Rosario to Vampire is a comedy story set in a supernatural high school called Youkai Academy. The story explores the romantic exploits and life experiences of Tsukune, a new student who is enrolled in the monsters-only school. The parents inadvertently enrolled him in the school as a last-ditch effort to secure his education after Tsukune failed to secure a place in any high school due to his poor grade.
Students at Youkai Academy are all monsters learning to coexist with humans. The monster students attend their classes in human form. In actuality, though, no actual human is tolerated within the school precincts. According to the monsters’ decree, any actual human who shows up at the school must be executed immediately.
Tsukune’s experience at his new school begins very smoothly. It isn’t long before he has a crush on Moka Akashiya, the most attractive girl on campus. Little does he know that beneath that beauty lies a menacing vampire that will suck the life out of him if and when the opportunity comes.
17. The Asterisk War
The Asterisk War is a story detailing the duel of elite Genestellas as they take part in entertainment battles called Festas in the newly formed conglomerate called Integrated Empire Foundation. Genestellas are a new species of humans born with phenomenal capabilities in the new world conglomerate.
After joining the prestigious Seidoukan Academy recently, Ayato Amagiri accidentally comes across Julius Alexia von Riessfeld, a popular Witch of Resplendent Flames, half-naked. Out of anger, the witch challenges Ayato to a duel for invading her privacy.
After a series of deliberations and consultations, the duel is voided by the students’ council president. Craftily, Ayato claims that he isn’t interested in Festas and that his main reason for enrolling at the academy was to try and locate his missing elder sister. However, things soon take a twist, and Ayato takes part in one Festas and wins against some of the planet’s most experienced Genestelas.
18. Freezing
An inhuman alien race called Novas has put humanity under siege a couple of decades into the future. Humans have organized Nova Clashes to try and stave off the devastation that these inhuman aliens are inflicting on human civilizations. Pandoras and Limiters are implanted with stigmata to give them superhuman powers and military skills needed to fight the inhuman invaders.
Freezing is the story of Kazuya Aoi. He has just enrolled into the West Genetics Military Academy when the battle Royale is being waged by the Pandoras against the Novas. During this battle, Kazuya mistakenly embraces Satellizer el Bridget, a powerful Pandora known as the “Untouchable Queen,” thinking she is his deceased sister. Satellizer ends up losing the fight but takes Kazuya as her Limiter. What’s not clear is whether their newfound friendship and partnership can survive future battles and the machinations of the upperclassmen. Only time will tell!
19. Mahou Sensei
Mahou Sensei is a story about Negi Springfield, a 10-year-old wizard with just a single task before becoming an accomplished master wizard. For the final test, he’s supposed to be an English instructor at an all-female boarding school. On his first day at the prestigious girl school, Negi embarrasses her students called Asuna Kagurazaka. His troubles only worsen when Asuna learns that he’s a witch and promises to disclose his secret unless he helps her out. In a strange twist of fate, though, Asuna and Negi are great friends and lovers. Among other things, they partner in doing magic, fighting off evil wizards, and helping the class pass their final exam.
20. Knight’s and Magic
Knight’s and Magic is the story of Tsubasa Karata, an Otaku from modern Japan, who died in a car crash. He’s reborn into a medieval world called the Fremmevilla Kingdom under the new name of Ernesti Echevarria. In this new world, Silhouette Knights fight demonic beasts. His new family is noble, and he’s immediately bestowed with magical powers.
Ernesti soon joins the Royal Laihaila Academy to sharpen his magical skills. In the academy, students are trained on piloting the Silhouette Knights, prepping them to protect the Fremmevilla Kingdom from human and demonic threats. At the school, Ernesti befriends twins named Adeltrud and Archid Olter and sets out on a mission to create their own Silhouette Knight.
21. Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic
Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic is the story of Aladdin and his mentor Ugo the flute Djinn. Aladdin befriends Alibaba Saluja, who takes part in the attack on a local merchant’s supply cart. Alibaba and his new friend Aladdin both agree to try and conquer the nearest dungeon to compensate the local merchant.
Countless mysterious labyrinths called Dungeons thought to hide incredible treasures are spread throughout the world. The Dungeons are the work of a class of elite magicians called Magi who use them to help people build their empires. Supernatural beings called Djinns rule over the labyrinths and only grant access to successful conquerors. Successful candidates are selected as potential rulers of the world.
22. Quanzhi Fashi
Mo Fan dreams of being a high school student in a new universe where magic has replaced the essence of science. In this universe, the best students are taught the wonders of spell working to fend off beasts that lurk in the surrounding forests. That notwithstanding, Mo Fan remains the son of a poor laborer and has a crippled younger sister. He succeeds in attending a magic school in the new universe with the sole aim of ultimately paying his father for his hard work.
However, it isn’t long before the rumor of his abject poverty background and inept magic skills spreads around, making other students look down on him. Be that as it may, Mo Fan goes ahead to harness powerful fire and lightning elements in readiness for any dangerous encounters.
23. Qualidea Code
Qualidea Code is a story about the use of cryogenic freezing to preserve Japanese children till the end of the war when faced with the risk of extinction caused by the onslaught of aliens called Unknowns. The war between humans and aliens has raged on for decades now, and humanity is beginning to have an advantage. In a certain corner of Japan, the current war frontline, humans have established a foothold. There’s no more risk of extinction, and therefore humans decide to awaken children who had been cryogenically preserved.
However, humanity isn’t aware of is that their awakening cryopreserved kids had developed supernatural powers unique to each of them. Six of the most powerful children are paired together to take charge of the newly reclaimed cities. Ichiya Suzaku and Canaria Utara are assigned to Tokyo, Maihime Tenkawa and Hotaru Rindou take charge of Kanagawa, while Kasumi Chinusa and Asuha Chigusa manage Chiba.
With the new commanders in place, petty rivalries become routine between the three cities. The Unknowns are taking advantage of the inter-city rivalries to increase their attacks. Magic-Kyun! Renaissance is the story of Kohana Aigasaki, a strange new student at Hoshinomori Private Magical Arts High School. In this school, elite art magicians called Artistas are trained to work later in show business. It isn’t long before Kohana, the new student, is appointed to a committee tasked with planning the Hoshinomori Summer Festa, an annual school cultural festival.
At the school, Kohana falls in love with six other boys who’ve each specialized in their Art areas and are keen to make the Hoshi Fes a success. Moreover, each of the six boys, together with Kohana, is all focused on winning the school’s coveted annual Artista Prince and Princess titles.

Demon King Daimao is the epic tale of Akuto Sai and Junko Hattori, two friends who dream of using magic to change the world for good.

28. Toaru Kagaku No Railgun
Toaru Kagaku No Railgun is the story of Mikoto Misaka and her friends. The story is set in a glamorous utopian school called Academy City. The school is home to the Esper development program for training future scientists. In the school, there are seven powerful “Level 5” Espers.
Mikoto Misaka is a middle schooler and the third most powerful Esper in the Academy. She belongs to a class of electricity manipulators called “the Railgun.” Mikoto has learned to associate each crime in the city to “Level Upper,” a legendary device thought to boost any user’s Esper level. Over time, though, it becomes more apparent that Academy City is more twisted than previously thought.

Cardcaptor Sakura is a story detailing the magical escapades of a ten-year-old fourth-grade girl called Sakura Kinomoto. The story begins when Sakura comes across cards concealed in a mysterious book. By accidentally stirring a magical gust of wind that scatters the cards worldwide. The little girl has no time to figure out the nature of the cards she accidentally released into the world.
Amidst the chaos, Sakura ends up awakening Keroberos, the Beast of Seal, from inside the book of cards. Keroberos lets Sakura know that she’d released the mystical Clow Cards created by Clow Reed, the sorcerer.
According to the sorcerer, the mystical Clow cards have incredible magical powers. He sealed them inside the book because they act independently to cause havoc. To prevent the potential destruction of epic proportions in the world, all the Clow cards have to be recaptured and sealed again.
To do that, the Beast of Seal gives Sakura the Sealed Key and the title of “the Cardcaptor.” With the blessings of her friend Tomoyo Daidouji and the guidance of Kero-chan, Sakura the Cardcaptor sets off on her secret magical mission of recapturing all the mystical Clow Cards.
