As anime started to become more popular, more sets of personalities started to appear. Ever heard of the term “Dere” before? Many personality terms end with “-dere”.
For example, Tsundere characters are harsh and cold to most people, especially their love interest, but once they are complimented by them, they get all flustered, shy, and embarrassed. Another term is Yandere, characters that are so obsessed with their crush that they would kill anyone who would cause them to feel jealous. They would also kill their lover if there was a chance for the lover to cheat on them.
With the increasing popularity of these terms and these types of personalities, Traps have also appeared in the anime industry. Whether it’s a normal trap or a reverse trap, a character would look completely different from their biological gender. Today we will talk about Anime that includes at least one trap character.
1. Astolfo
from Fate/Apocrypha
The fate series timeline is quite complicated. New fans struggle to understand where to begin, as there are visual novels, games, movies, and other forms of content that they could start at.
However, Fate/Apocrypha is the one that features Astolfo, a Rider-class Servant. In Fate/Apocrypha, the Holy Grail’s existence creates a war between many masters and their Heroic summons. Legendary figures throughout history have become servants to their masters. Although there are rules to follow, the end goal is to obtain the Holy Grail, a powerful item that grants the wish of its holder.
2. Ferris
from Re: Zero
His full name is Felix Argyle, one of Crusch’s loyal knights. Ferris is a very feminine character with a magical ability to heal others. He plays an important supporting role when he helps Subaru defeat the Sin of Sloth. Re: Zero is an Isekai type of anime where it transfers Subaru to a fantasy world.
But there is a twist! Every time Subar dies he goes back to a certain “Check Point”. It is up to Subaru to adapt to the events that will happen in order to survive and accomplish his goals.
3. Nagisa Shiota
from Assassination Classroom
One of the main characters in the series. Nagisa Shiota is an ordinary student who has been enrolled in a special classroom called Assassination Classroom. The mission behind it is to kill the teacher. Sounds disturbing, correct? Will not really, because their teacher is a supernatural entity that shattered the moon, and promised to do the same to earth. But to make things fun, he gave humans a chance to kill him.
He can’t be killed by a normal arsenal, and he also moves extremely fast. The only thing that can harm him is fake guns and weapons. This is why they gave such tasks to students. Because it is harmless for them and it falls under the condition of the strange entity.
4. Ruka Urushibara
from Steins; Gate
The self-proclaimed mad scientist, Rintarou Okabe, has accidentally created a device that can manipulate time. By mere accident, he discovered that a message he sent to his friend was received a week ago. Later, he gets involved in a secret organization that is trying to control time and is also possibly related to the recent murder of a girl.
In this anime, a character named Ruka Urushibara and also known as “Rukako” is introduced. Although Rukako looks and acts like a female, they were born a male. Steins; Gate has received many awards and was regarded as one of the best visual novels created.
5. Chihiro Fujisaki
from Danganronpa
Hope’s Peak Private Academy has invited many students from different majors to enroll in their education system. Makoto Naegi is one of those ‘lucky’ students who got the chance to attend Hope’s Peak Private Academy. However, things go wrong when Makoto goes unconscious and wakes up in an empty classroom. Later, he encounters other students who appear to have met the same fate as Makoto.
The invitation was a trap, and the students are stuck in this Academy. The only way to escape is to kill someone. Chihiro Fujisaki is one of the students trapped. He is a programmer that looks timid and feminine, though he wishes he wasn’t so that way people won’t see him as a weak person.
6. Mare Bello Fiore
from Overlord
Overlord is an Isekai anime about a virtual reality game. Yggdrasil was shutting down, and their players were spending the game’s last hour inside the game. However, what they didn’t expect to happen was to remain conscious inside.
One of the players was the master of dark magic, named Ainz Ooal Gown, and he is the protagonist of the story. He became surprised when he realized most NPCs in the game have changed in the way they speak, they have developed personalities as if they were real. Mare Bello Fiore is a dark elf that wears a skirt even though they were born a male.
7. Kaoru Daichi
from Ladies Versus Butlers
Hino Akiharu has become a butler at his Uncle’s household to make up for all the problems and responsibilities he caused for being adopted. However, he can’t be a good butler without some sort of training. For that reason, he started attending Hakureiryou High school, where he became both a student and a butler.
There, Hino failed to make new friends at the beginning because of his intimidating appearance. One of the butlers he met there was Kaoru, a male dressed as a female.
8. Haganai
from I don’t have many friends
Kodaka Hasegawa is a teenage boy that has an intimidating look and an unnatural hair color, though it had been that way ever since his birth. Kodaka struggled to make friends, all until he met a girl named Yozora, who also lacked friends. Together, they agreed on making a new club with the purpose of finding new friends.
One of the friends they made is Yukimura who is claimed to be a boy. They however look extremely feminine. Even though they are feminine, Yukimura still wants to be manly, and he asks for advice from Kodaka.
9. Hideri Kanzaki
from Blend S
Maika Sakuranomiya wants nothing but the feeling of being independent. That way she will have a sense of freedom in her life, even though she is 16-year-old. Unfortunately, Maika got rejected by many workplaces, all except Cafe Stile.
However, Maika must become a roleplaying servant to customers. She has to wear a custom and speak to people in a certain tone. One of the coworkers in Cafe Stile is Hideri. As a waitress, Hideri gets the chance to dream of becoming an idol, although the twist is that he is a boy.
10. Aoi Hyoudou
from Kaichou wa Maid Sama
Misaki was the first female student to become the president of the student council. Seeking attention or not, Misaki definitely got many people talking about her, letting herself become the center of attention from such accomplishments. Misaka wants to side with all girls in her school and help them have a better school life.
However, one of the obstacles that stand in her way is Takumi Usui, a popular boy that barely cares about what the student council president says. Aoi Hyoudou is a male character that loves dressing as girls do. He adores cute things and he wants to play with boys’ feelings only to be exposed by Misaki.
11. Totsuka Saika
from Oregairu
Hachiman Hikigaya is a high school student with a negative mindset towards societies and relationships. He doesn’t find joy in youth and he is stubborn with his ideals no matter what other people say. One day, Hachiman gets assigned to join the Volunteer Service Club.
Having no choice, Hachiman and another club member named Yukino Yukinoshita tries to help other people solve their problem. Totsuka Saika is a male student with a feminine appearance, and he doesn’t like it when people mistake him for a girl. Totsuka is a great tennis player who later helps Hachiman improve his tennis skills.
12. Kirishima Ryou
from A Wolf in Women’s Clothing
Although this anime is considered for Adult Only, there is a safe-to-watch version where it censors all the 18+ scenes between the characters. However, the whole idea of the show is still not safe to watch. Shizuka Kominami is a shy innocent student.
One day, she meets Kirishima Ryou, a beautiful, mature, and friendly woman, or at least that was what Shizuka thought. As she tries to get along with her, Shizuka discovers that Ryou is actually a man dressed as a woman. Being in shock and disbelief, she seeks to get some answers, but at that stage, it was too late, as Ryou had already seduced Shizuka.
13. Tsukimiya Ringo
from Uta no Prince-Sama
The Adviser of Class A. Tsukimiya Ringo is a 23-year-old male who loves to crossdress. Most of the time, he has been seen cross-dressing as an idol. His appearance also helps him not be distinguished from the women.
Uta no Prince-Sama is an anime that talks about Haruka Nanami, a girl from the countryside that wishes to become a melodist. Saotome Academy offers all the required skills she needs to become a successful one, but little did she know that everyone in that Academy is an idol, putting a lot of pressure on her shoulders as a student and a future composer.
14. Hideyoshi Kinoshita
From Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu
Fumizuki Academy has a unique system where freshman students must take a test at the end of the year so that the highest scorers would be ranked into different classes. Akishia Yoshii had unfortunately failed to provide good scores, getting him stuck in the F class.
There, he met a classmate named Hideyoshi Kinoshita who appears to be a girl. But in reality, he is a fine male student, and he is aware that people often mistake him to be a girl. Meeting plenty of other students and forming a friendship, Akishia and others seek to rise to the top.
15. Najimi Osana
From Komi can’t communicate
Also known as “Komi-san”, a high school student with a communication disorder. Komi is finding it difficult to interact with people and strangers, yet to be able to make friends is even a harder task.
However, Komi doesn’t give up and she remains eager to make one hundred new friends! Luckily for her, a couple of students took interest in her and they decided to help her overcome her anxiety. One of those students is Nakimi Osana. Although they might appear as a girl, they were remembered for being male in the past.
16. Emporio Ivankov
From One Piece
Can Ivankov be said to be a trap? Well, yes. Although his appearance looks extremely masculine, Ivankov’s devil fruit allows him to change his own gender as well as other people’s gender. Emporio Ivankov was also revealed to be a high-ranking member of the revolutionary army, being friends with Dragon, Luffy’s biological father.
Ivankov can be seen seducing Sanji while maintaining his female form, only to transform back to being a man, causing Sanji to be turned off instantly.
17. Haku
From Naruto
One of the first anime trap characters to be introduced to the anime community. Naruto is an anime known by everyone, even those who didn’t watch it at least have an idea about the show and its story. Haku is a ninja who encountered Naruto while on a special mission.
Although Naruto mistook his beauty for a female, he could be seen blushing and acting a bit embarrassed, until Haku revealed that he was a guy. It was later shown that Haku was Zabuza’s subordinate.
18. Kurapika
From Hunter x Hunter
Perhaps a controversial name to put on the list, but Kurapika had always been regarded as a hunter with a mysterious gender. Even in the anime, he was teased for looking like a weak girl. The story of Hunter x Hunter revolves around Gon, a 12-year-old boy who wants to find his father and become a great hunter.
On his journey, he encounters Kurapika, another individual who also wants to get a hunter’s license. When asked for the reason, Kurapika mentioned that he wanted to take revenge on the Phantom Troupe for massacring his clan.
19. Neferpitou
From Hunter x Hunter
Another character from Hunter x Hunter is Neferpitou, also known as “Pitou”. Although they have a feminine appearance, a feminine voice, and cute behavior, the author confirmed them to be a male. Many fans refused to believe that idea and convinced themselves that the anime made Pitou female while the manga addressed Pitou as male.
Whether it is true or not, it is still worth mentioning that Pitou is a hybrid creature that originated from an ant. Pitou is also extremely powerful, capable of performing full attacks in less than a second. Pitou adores fighting strong hunters, but nothing is more important than protecting King Meruem.
20. Kalluto Zoldyck
From Hunter x Hunter
Yes, it seems that Hunter x Hunter is full of Trap characters, and that is quite true. The author mentioned that the Zoldyck family has no male members except the mother. This means that Kalluto, Killua’s younger sibling, is male despite their feminine appearance.
The anime didn’t confirm Kalluto’s gender, as they didn’t refer to them with “He” or “She”, but if the author stated that Kalluto is a boy, then there is nothing to argue about. Kalluto is a trained assassin who joined the Phantom Troupe to become stronger. Just like Killua, they also have intimidating bloodlust when they are about to finish off their enemies.
